SnekkerstenThe town's name comes from Snekke, a type of Viking ship, long and narrow like a worm or snake. The town is a neighbourhood in Elsinore and originally started as two fishing villages in Snekkersten and Skotterup. It is mainly made up of low buildings, especially villas and terrace houses. Snekkersten is only a couple of kilometres north of Espergærde, separated by Egebæksvang Forest. Drive along Strandvejen (coast road) to Copenhagen and you will pass through Snekkersten. The town has a harbour with commercial fishing and many sailboats, a shopping centre and two schools.

Illegal transport to SwedenDuring the World War II German occupation of Denmark, Snekkersten became one of the main towns used to illegally transport refugees to Sweden, because of its proximity to the Swedish coast.
Kystens PerleJust north of the harbour is Kystens Perle, previously a hotel built with Marshall Plan funding. It replaced the Snekkersten Inn, which had burned down, and for many years was a popular attraction for contemporary celebrities. Most of the building has since been turned into apartments.
