The name Hundested originates from royal seal hunts on a reef named "Hunderevet" or "Seal reef". The first harbour was built at the end of the 19th century.
The seals are still here, but now you can only see them by the reefs at Hesselø.

Today the
harbour is an active commercial port with fishing boats and yachts. The
ferry from Rørvig to Hundested makes the city the western gateway to North Sealand and helps to create life in the area.
In short all the right ingredients for a daily walk along the waterfront.

In the outskirts of Hundested you find the ecological village
Dyssekilde in Torup.
