HornbækThe fishing hamlet of Hornbæk was first named as a settlement in the Codex Esromensis and treasury in 1497. Esrum Abbey taxed the fishermen via a “landing levy”, which they had to pay in fish. Construction of the actual harbour began in 1873 and for many years the harbour was used for goods, where schooners and galleasses anchored and unloaded timber, cement, fertiliser, etc. The picturesque scenery attracted traders and countless young painters in the summer. They lodged with the fishermen or stayed in the inn and painted beach scenes, the Stokken (the fishermen’s assembly place), the smithy, etc.

A walk around the town today will show just how important these painters were to the town, with street names such as P.S. Krøyers Vej, Drachmanns Vej, Lochersvej, etc. Among the first holiday homes to be built in Denmark in the 1890s were those in “The Little Plantation” west of Hornbæk harbour. Some of Denmark’s most expensive holiday homes are found in Hornbæk, which is a popular summer holiday destination. For many years Hornbæk was well known for its large revues, directed by the famous actor-director Stig Lommer. Entertainment still goes on in the summer, with the Bric-a-brac market, Midsummer's Eve festival on the beach, Hornbæk Harbour Gala, Art in The Tent, church concerts, etc.
