HillerødHillerød is the administrative headquarters for the Capital Region of Denmark. Hillerød is the third largest town in the area after Copenhagen and Helsingør.
Frederiksborg CastleHillerød formed around the old farm of Hillerødsholm (Hylderødsholm, cf. elderberry tree on the town coat of arms). The farm was located next to the medieval town of Hilderød (meaning Hilde’s clearing), which dates from around the 13th century. Frederik II acquired the land at Hillerødsholm farm and built Frederiksborg Castle. His son Christian IV later renovated and extended the castle.

Frederiksborg CastleFrederik II took many initiatives to make the town a regional commercial centre. Although never officially granted market town status, in reality it was, especially with the king's close connection to Frederiksborg Castle.
A number of major firesThe town suffered a number of major fires, and in addition many old buildings were demolished in the second half of the 20th century, so only a few historic buildings remain.
