Gilleleje

Gilleleje is a lively tourist, commercial and fishing town. Its heart is the fishing port, Sealand's largest.

The old town in Gilleleje

Gilleleje lies in Gribskov Municipality, at Sealand's northernmost point, Gilbjerghoved. The town has preserved many of the idyllic cosy streets and thatched houses built when it was a fishing village.

An attractive holiday destination

While still a commercial fishing town, Gilleleje attracts many tourists every year from home and abroad. The Kattegat's many fine beaches, the varied countryside and proximity to Copenhagen’s many cultural attractions make Gilleleje an attractive holiday destination.

Life on the harbour

Gilleleje is also a commercial town, with a range and quality to match much bigger towns. It has a lively cultural scene with annual folk festivals and events, e.g. Bakkefest (traditional summer party), Havnefest (harbour gala), Jazz at the Harbour, Kunstrunden (art fair) and Kunst i Filet'en (art exhibition).

The Fyr path

The name Gilleleje

stems from the old Norwegian words "gil", meaning cleft, and "leje", which was the fisherman's word for a seasonal fishing settlement on the coast. Settlers can be traced back to the 16th century.

October 1943

In October 1943, during World War II, Gilleleje became a secret refuge and escape route for over 1000 Danish Jews who were fleeing the Nazis. The local population hid the Jews until the fishermen could sail them across the Øresund to neutral Sweden and freedom.

The living harbour

The scent of tar, fish and sea floats on the breeze when you take a walk on Gilleleje Harbour. The large, beautiful gulls sweep low through the air or stand on the pier eyeing the tourists curiously, as if to say: We live here. What are you doing here?

Gilleleje Harbour

Gilleleje Harbour is a living harbour. The charming sounds of the fishing boats mingle with the sounds of knocking and hammering in the shipyard, and the chatter of tourists adds to the music of the place as the day progresses. There is always something going on. The harbour is always alive. From sunrise to sundown.
